Y’all been asking for dune sunflowers, Helianthus debilis, for awhile now. Well, my suppliers finally have them ready, and I picked some up today. I do want you to know that they just started breaking winter dormancy, so they are small.
This is a good example of how plants grow differently if they’re in the ground or in containers. We all probably have recently seen dune sunflowers that are in the ground already leafing out and maybe even blooming. So why the difference between those and the group that I have? The simple answer is roots of containerized plants get colder in the winter than the roots of plants that have Mother Earth covering them. Cold roots can take longer to warm up, which means the plants break dormancy later.
Most containers have multiple plants in them. They are fast growers, so they’ll be filling up your garden beds in no time.
I got 35 of them. They usually sell pretty quickly, so I’ll get more in a couple of weeks.
