Y’all. I picked up the last four 7-gallon Ashe Magnolias, Magnolia macrophylla var. ashei, that my supplier had in stock, and, oh my soul, are they gorgeous!! AND, they have buds/blooms on them! I had to take pics so you could see how very stunning they are. How I wish the screen was scratch and sniff so you could smell that glorious lemony/magnolia fragrance coming off the blooms.
The unopened flower buds are quite large and grow straight up on the stems. When the flowers first open, they are cup-shaped and the petals curl under at their tips. As the flowers age, they flattens out, which gives you a better angle to see the beautiful purple/red splotches at the base. Oh my.

Thankfully the flowers are large so they don’t get hidden in the huge, tropical looking leaves.

The Ashe Magnolias in the 3-gallon size and 7-gallon size are smaller than some of the other trees I sell. The 3-gallons are 1 – 2 feet tall, and the 7-gallons are about 4 feet tall. They will mature at 20 – 25 feet tall.
But those leaves, y’all. How gorgeous are they with their huge size and silvery-white color underneath.

Because it grows in the wild as an understory tree, this Magnolia prefers to be planted in a part sun, part shade, or shade spot in your garden. It especially needs to be protected from the hot summer afternoon sun so its leaves don’t burn.
Did you know that the only place in the entire world that the Ashe Magnolia grows naturally is in a few counties in the Florida Panhandle??? Yep, it is endemic to Florida. Unfortunately, it is listed by the State as endangered because its natural habitat is being destroyed. So, please, if you see one in the wild, take only pictures of it.
Ready to have one of these beauties in your nativescape? Well, click here, Ashe Magnolia, to go to its description page to place an order. I’ll have more of the 3-gallon size in stock next week.
Happy diggin’ in the dirt!
