Description
Botanical Name: Liatris gracillis
Common Name: Slender Blazing Star, Graceful Blazing Star
Description: Yet another of our gorgeous Florida native Liatris species.
Slender Blazing Star is a perennial wildflower that blooms lavender/purple flowers in late summer to fall. Like the other Liatris species, the flowers bloom on a tall stem that forms from the basal rosette of leaves. It grows 2-4 feet tall x 1 foot wide. Very drought tolerant once established. It doesn’t like to be planted in a continuously wet area. Plant in the sun or part sun areas of your garden.
Butterflies, bees, and other pollinators are attracted to its flowers. Birds eat the seeds, so leave the dried seedheads on for them. Is usually deer resistant. Bunnies sometimes eat it.
Its native habitat is in flatwoods, sand hills, scrub, and deciduous woodlands. It grows in well drained lime rock and sandy soils.
Not salt tolerant of inundation by salty or brackish water. Low/no tolerance of salty wind or direct salt spray.
This plant in 1-gallon containers is 5 – 8 inches tall when not in bloom, 2-3 feet tall when in bloom.
Plant Lore: The specific epithet ‘gracillis’ means slender in Latin and refers to its single stem.
