Description
Botanical Name: Conradina grandiflora
Common Name: Pineland Mint, Largeflower False Rosemary, Large-Flowered Conradina
Description: Very cool Florida native shrub that grows 2-4 fee tall x 1-3 feet wide. Blooms beautiful and fragrant whitish/lavender flowers in spring through summer, sometimes into fall. Evergreen. When crushed, the needle-like leaves send out a minty-fresh fragrance. Is deer resistant. Can also be grown in a container. Is in the mint family, but is not an aggressive grower. It has a moderate to fast growth rate. The leaves are edible and can be used for cooking.
Its native habitat is in scrub and coastal strands. Give it sun to part sun in well drained sandy soil and it’ll be happy. Very drought tolerant after becoming established.
Native bees, honeybees, butterflies, moths, and other pollinators are attracted to its flowers.
Per the Atlas of Florida Plants, this is listed as threatened by the State of Florida.
Not salt tolerant of inundation by salty or brackish water. Low/no tolerance of salty wind or direct salt spray.
This plant in 1-gallon containers is 5-15 inches tall.
Plant Lore: Conradina releases a chemical that suppresses the growth of other vegetation, including weeds, and thus
may be beneficial, but also may restrict growth of other plants close by.
