Buds, Blooms, and Berries 12/29 – 01/04

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a safe and relaxing holiday season. Ziva and I sure did.

How’s your garden growing this time of the year? I love doing walkabouts through Bella’s area and my personal garden to see what’s blooming. Being able to have something blooming in every season is just one of the many perks of living in the South. Keep in mind that in our area, October through April is the best time to plant those perennials, shrubs, and trees.

So. Here are the plants I found the week of 12/29 – 01/04 that were either blooming, budding, or berrying. Enjoy the tour!

The Glade Lobelia, Lobelia glandulosa, and Red Tropical Sage, Salvia coccinea, are blooming in my personal garden. I set the pot of tropical sage in my frog pond a few months ago with the intention of transplanting it. But it seems to be so happy where it is that I just left it be. The Glade Lobelia is just one of the native plants that are starting to pop up on their own in the personal garden. This year will be very exciting to see what shows up.

I do sell the Red Tropical Sage, but am out of them. I’ll get more as soon as my suppliers have them ready. The picture at the top of the page is of the Red Tropical Sage I had in stock back in July. I just couldn’t resist using that pic because of the beautiful black swallowtail butterfly sipping nectar from the blooms.

The Climbing Aster, Symphyotrichum carolinianum, Firebush, Hamelia patens, Viburnum obovatum ‘Densa,’ and Pineland Mint, Conradina grandiflora, are all pics of the plants in Bella’s area. Click on each plant name to be taken to its Garden Shop description page to learn more about them and to buy yourself some.

Even though the Viburnum are evergreen, they do drop their old leaves this time of the year. That’s why some of the leaves in the pic are yellow.

The Leavenworth’s Tickseed, Coreopsis leavenworthii, is a pop-up from the ones I had in stock earlier in the year. I’ll have more of those beauties for sale in the spring.

I recently got some of the Swamp Azaleas, Rhododendron viscosum, in stock. They are dormant, but are already setting flower buds. I’ll have the description page for it completed soon.

I saw that gorgeous Yaupon Holly,  Ilex vomitoria, when I was out making deliveries. Had to stop to take a pic of it because it’s absolutely stunning. I do have those in stock in 3-gallon and 7-gallon sizes.

What’s blooming in your garden??

Happy diggin’ in the dirt!
