Rock Rose

Botanical Name:  Pavonia lasiopetala

Common Name:  Rock Rose, Rose Pavonia, Rose Mallow, Pavonia, Las Rosas de San Juan, Pavonia Mallow, Texas Mallow, Texas Pavonia, Wright Pavonia

Description:  Super cool small shrub that is native only to west Texas! In the areas it’s native to and in south Texas, it’s an evergreen shrub. Here in our area, it’s a very hardy perennial. It blooms pretty little 2″ pink flowers from spring till frost. Is related to the native hibiscus, which is apparent by the look of the flowers. The flowers are pretty cool in that they open in the morning and close up by early afternoon in our highest heat. Has velvety, scalloped leaves. Attracts hummingbirds and other pollinators. Not only is it pretty, but this is one tough little shrub because it tolerates heat, drought, and sun. Likes to be planted in that sun or part sun area of your garden. Grows 2-4′ tall and wide with a naturally loose, open-branching form. It blooms on new wood, which means it can be pruned at any time of the year. Needs well drained soils, but adapts to many different soil types: medium loam rocky, limestone-based, sandy, sandy loam, clay loam, clay, or caliche type. It would be perfect for your rock garden or areas that don’t get extra irrigation, but it also adapts well to regular gardening irrigation. Just don’t over water it. Moderate deer resistance. Also good for growing in containers. This is a short-lived perennial, 3-6 years, but it reseeds itself nicely.

Don’t get the Pavonia Rock Rose confused with the Cistus Rock Rose. They are two different plants, with the Cistus Rock Rose, Cistus purpureus, being from the European Mediterranean.

Interesting Tidbit:  Rock Rose only blooms pink flowers. It doesn’t bloom any other colors. Rock rose is native to rocky, disturbed soils, which is where its name comes from.
